Rohl could ruthlessly sell Cameron in Rangers move for £5m "sensation"

The Daily Record recently reported that Glasgow Rangers attacking midfielder Lyall Cameron is waiting to learn what is in store for him in the January transfer window.

It was claimed that the Scottish talent could be sent out on loan for the second half of the season, having struggled for game time at Ibrox, but it remains to be seen whether or not Danny Rohl will sanction a move.

The outlet added that there is interest from teams in Scotland and England, should the Gers decide to let him go, which means that there is a decision for the club to make.

Why Rangers should sell Lyall Cameron

Just half a season on from signing him from Dundee, Rangers should consider selling Cameron when the January transfer window opens for business, because it is a move that has not worked out yet.

Per Transfermarkt, the Scottish midfielder has only played 422 minutes in all competitions this season, and has only featured in ten games out of the 24 matchday squads that he has made.

The 23-year-old talent has scored one goal and provided no assists in those ten matches for Rangers, as he found the back of the net in a 2-1 defeat to Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League in August.

Instead of sending him out on loan, the Light Blues should consider selling him because it could allow them to cash in on the reported interest from teams in England and Scotland. This would then avoid the risk of him going out on loan and struggling again, further reducing his value.

In order to facilitate a sale of the Scottish central midfielder, though, the Gers must first swoop to sign one of their reported transfer targets in his position.

The star Rangers should sign to replace Lyall Cameron

It was reported last month that Rohl was pushing the club to secure a deal to sign Jens Hjerto-Dahl from Tromso to bolster his options in the middle of the park.

If Rangers can get a deal over the line for the Norwegian "sensation", as he was described by journalist Pete O'Rourke, that would open the door for the club to sell Cameron, rather than loan him out, because they would be signing a younger player in his position.

It does not bode well for Cameron, 23, if they sign Hjerto-Dahl, 20, on a permanent deal, because even if he went on loan and came back to Ibrox in the summer, he would then have the youngster ahead of him in the pecking order.

Even if you look at the Scottish midfielder's impressive form for Dundee in the 2024/25 campaign, when he scored nine goals and provided five assists in the Scottish Premiership, Hjerto-Dahl could come in and offer more to the team in midfield.

As you can see in the table above, the Norwegian youngster does not offer quite as much of a threat at the top end of the pitch, but he is still capable of chipping in with goals and assists.

It is his physical attributes, though, that really stand out over Cameron's. He has the mobility, physicality, and strength to offer quality defensively and in transition as a ball carrier, as evidenced by his statistics in the Eliteserien this term.
